Born in Vienna in 1862 in a lower middle class family as his
childhood was spent in poverty.
In1876, he was awarded a scholarship to the school of arts
and crafts in Vienna where he studied and got training as an architectural
painter till 1883.
After finishing his studies he opened a studio together with Matsch and Ernist Klimt. The three specialized in interior decoration, especially theatres. Along the years they became recognized through their work, being the foremost of decorators, decorating famous theatres like for scenes from the Shakespearean globe theatre.

The trio fell apart as Klimts changing style made it
impossible for them to work together on any project. Matsch wanted to branch
out into portrait painting and Ernst died in 1892.

His painting "the kiss" inspired an introduction of the anime "Elfen lied"

With such tragedies, gustav stayed away from public life and
retreated to his studies of contemporary
styles of art aswell as historical styles like Japanese, Chinese,
ancient Egyptian and Mycenaean art.
Klimts “golden phase” was marked by positive reaction and success.
It was called a ”golden phase” due to the fact that many of his paintings used Gold leaf as seen in the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer[1907] and The Kiss [1907-1908]
